TC Research - USA

Federal Government Study on TC 1976

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, funded the first year of this study to evaluate the long term results of Teen Challenge. This study focused on all students in the class of 1968 that entered TC Brooklyn, NY, and then transferred to TC in Rehrersburg, PA, for the second half of their training. This follow-up study (1975) sought to determine six variables: what proportion of the program participants were still drug free, no legal involvements, employed or pursuing education, a part of a family unit, participating in church activities, and physical and mental health.

Teen Challenge Chattanooga, TN 1994

Teen Challenge of Chattanooga, Inc. commissioned an alumni survey in 1994 to assess the effectiveness of its program in helping drug addicts find freedom from their addictions. The survey was conducted by Dr. Roger Thompson, Head of the Criminal Justice Department at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The study determined that graduates of this Teen Challenge program had a 67% success rate in living a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.

Northwestern University Study 1999

A major study of TC graduates, surveying the three largest TC centers in the USA. This research project was the first of its kind to survey TC graduates nationally. The three participting centers are located in Rehrersburg, PA, Cape Girardeau, MO, and Riverside, CA. These centers work with males only. The focus of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the TC approach to treatment of drug and alcohol addiction by surveying graduates who had been out of TC for 12, 18 and 24 months. Results indicated that TC had great success with those who came from severely dysfunctional family backgrounds with long term addictions.

Teen Challenge Minnesota Study 2007

This research focused on Teen Challenge Minnesota alumni who graduated between 2001 and 2005. The study included, adult men and women and adolescents. The study was designed and conducted by Wilder Research, an independent evaluator, under the direction of Patricia Owen, Ph.D., substance abuse research consultant and Michelle Decker Gerrard, Ed.M. and Greg Owen.

Teen Challenge Indianapolis - Female Adolescent Study 1992

This study was conducted in 1992 by Shawna Girgis, a staff at Teen Challenge, Indianapolis, Indiana, and was conducted as a part of her university studies. The study included female adolescents who had graduated in the last three years. This study showed similar success rates to the adult Teen Challenge programs in helping teens find freedom from drug addiction.

TC Research - Australia

Teen Challenge New South Wales 2012

This research project was conducted on behalf of Teen Challenge in New South Wales, Australia. This independent study was conducted by Dr. Danuta Chessor of the Centre for Health Research, School of Psychology at the University of Western Sydney. The project was completed In January 2012. It evaluated the effectiveness of the Teen Challenge adult men's residential program in Yarramundi, just outside of Sydney.
